Creative Cooking II This class will allow the more experienced cook to take their skills to the next level. Description Do you love to cook? Want to learn how to make inventive dishes? Creative cooking may be for you! This class will allow the more experienced cook to take their skills to the next level. Students will be taught challenging cooking techniques, how to combine flavors, and will be encouraged to use their abilities to create culinary adventures. Lesson plans will be geared toward the interests and skills of each class and will include the occasional basket challenge (building a dish based on "mystery" ingredients provided). Students must be willing to work in groups and actively participate in class. Basic cooking knowledge (such as reading a recipe, measuring ingredients, having a solid grasp on kitchen safety, and a basic understanding of how to handle a knife) is necessary for success. Previous experience in Intro to Cooking class is helpful, but not required. Restrictive diets (such as complete elimination of vegetables, sugars, dairy, or wheat products) may not be able to be accommodated as we will be working with a wide range of ingredients. Please make a note on your registration form if you have any specific questions for the teacher. Students will be asked to bring in shelf-stable ingredients at the beginning of each unit. Exploring Stories II This class is designed for the bridge student who is looking for a language arts class. Class I and II may be taken in any order. Description This class is designed for the bridge student who is looking for a language arts class. Each week our class will explore a different short story (32+ total). Using these short stories we will cover literary elements (setting, character traits, theme, symbolism, conflict, figurative language, point of view, tone, and some non-fiction elements also). This class will also introduce vocabulary, develop grammar skills, and provide opportunities for increasing effective writing skills. Please note : This class alternates stories each year. Therefore, it is possible for students to take the class for 2 years without repeating stories. Students may take Exploring Stories II without having been enrolled in Exploring Stories I. Lego II Learn a broad range of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) concepts using Lego. Description This class provides students the opportunity to explore and more deeply understand a broad range of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) concepts, including but not limited to, force, motion, and energy through a hands-on learning approach. Working in partner groups, students will utilize a kit of 400 LEGO bricks and a motor to explore and create simple and powered machines to model and better understand STEM concepts. Outside classwork/homework will be minimal but may be assigned weekly. The class will promote and require collaboration and observation and the ability to listen and follow directions will be key to success. Note: this class will have different projects and topics than 2nd Semester so a student can take one or both semesters. Civics Provides students with knowledge to intelligently exercise their citizenship responsibilities. Description This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how our local, state, and federal governments operate. The primary purpose of this course is to give the student knowledge they need to know to be able to intelligently exercise their citizenship responsibilities. In addition to the textbook, The Land of Fair Play, students will be working on notebook studies on the Election Process, American Government and the US Constitution. Class time emphasizes interactive learning through engaging activities such as passing a mock bill, presenting persuasive arguments, participating in a scripted mock trial, experiencing the voting process, and electing a President. Through these experiences, students will gain a deeper understanding of government processes while strengthening their critical thinking, communication, and civic engagement skills. Homework includes reading assigned texts, responding to guided questions, reflecting on the material by developing and explaining personal opinions, and completing memorization exercises. This course fulfills the homeschool requirement for Civics at the secondary school level (grades 7–12) and is available to Bridge and High School students. Note: This class is also offered Period 3. Lunch Room Supervisor Schedule / Shift (If Applicable) Key Responsibilities Point of Contact: Serve as the contact person if a lunch parent cannot fulfill their duty. (Note: Parents should contact others on the schedule first before reaching out.) Ensure Coverage: Ensure the lunch area is properly staffed, with assistance from the front desk as needed. Assign Roles: Appoint a Snack/Church Fridge Attendant. Assign a Bathroom Pass Monitor and make sure they are tracking students coming and going. Supervise the Space: Position staff evenly around the lunch room. Maintain order—be the eyes and ears during lunch. Keep students in the designated area at all times for safety. Engagement & Safety: Limit staff socializing—students are the top priority. Assist younger students with opening containers and lunch items. Clean-Up Responsibilities: Wipe down tables between lunch periods. After lunch, wipe down tables and chairs. Vacuum or sweep the floor. Return chairs to tables evenly and neatly. Interpreting Scriptures This class is for those who want to learn how to interpret Scripture using Hermeneutics. Description Psalm 138:2 says that GOD "has magnified His word above His name" which stresses the importance of knowing what His word is saying. This class is for those who want to learn how to interpret His word using Hermeneutics; the science and art of applying methods and principles to correctly interpret scripture. At minimum, your student will learn how to cross reference scripture and to use a Strong's Exhaustive Concordance to translate words from Hebrew and Greek. Other topics covered are; Linguistics, Cultural, Geographics, Historical Gaps, Context, First Mention through Complete Mention, Covenantal Principle, the Christo-Centric Principle and more. Class time will be spent practicing those skills and learning about other resources that can help in their studies. Students will need to have a Bible and the textbook 'Interpreting the Scriptures' by Kevin J Conner available through Amazon. There will be approx. 1hr of homework per week. Front Door Security Schedule / Shift (If Applicable) Key Responsibilities Shifts: 8:00 - 11:30 AM and 11:30 AM - 2:40 PM Have a smile and a warm welcome! (But also, a sharp eye!) Make sure students/parents show the proper pass for entrance. Stop those who do not have a pass. (An approved directory is provided with names of those who may enter. ID must match directory.) No pass? No name in directory? No entrance! Those on church business MUST go to the church office doors. Door must stay locked and secure during KDO. Watch the rest rooms. Description This course is highly recommended for all students who are making the transition to more independent studies and for those who desire to have the benefit of learning great habits to make them a successful student! In addition to learning the seven habits, we will be going through the SOAR study workbook to learn how to implement practical ways to become a better student. We will find out what kind of learning style works best for your child so they can effectively study, learn time & task management methods, organizational skills, note taking strategies, goal setting & communication skills. This class is geared for 7th - 9th grade and these habits and skills will be used throughout high school and college. Cake Art II Gum Paste Flowers Description Learn the art of gum paste flowers. Use cutters and tools to shape individual petals and assemble them on wire to create a realistic-looking bouquet that will embellish any cake. Projects include daisy, carnation, peony, briar rose, calla lily, ivy, filler flowers and two different ways of making a rose. The final project will be a complete cake or display that the student will design, assemble, and bring on the last day for KDO students and staff to admire and vote for their favorite. Graphic Design Learn about and create graphic design projects. Description This semester-long course gets students started in the field of graphic design. With engaging multimedia projects and instructor-led activities, this class is designed to challenge and engage creativity. From designing a book cover to creating marketing materials, this course will give students a strong foundation for success in the graphic design field. Students will explore the following: design aesthetic; industrial design; fashion design; company rebranding; font, web and logo design; character design and animation. This art and design course will introduce students to a variety of design-based careers and projects through using free programs available online including Pixlr, Inkscape, Vectr, Canva, and Adobe Creative Cloud Express. These can be used on a standard desktop, laptop, Chromebook, or iPad.
