Photography I Learn to use a digital (DSLR) camera and to make great photos! Description This course covers basic concepts and practice of digital photography, including understanding and use of the camera, lenses, and other basic photographic equipment. Students will explore what makes a good photograph, the elements of photography and rules of composition. Students will learn the basic settings and functions of their camera: aperture, ISO, shutter speed and exposure. Please note, the DSLR camera must have adjustable Aperture, ISO and Shutter Speed modes. These are found on a dial on the top of the camera. Students will practice and demonstrate these skills and concepts by taking and critiquing their own photos, completing photography assignments, evaluating their knowledge of vocabulary and technical terms through quizzes and completing a portfolio of their work to be shared with the class. Apologetics Be ready to give a defense (apologia) to everyone who asks the reason for the hope we have! Description 1 Peter 3:15 says that we are to be ready to give a defense (apologia) to everyone who asks the reason for the hope we have. Starting with Defining Truth, we will build a solid foundation that will give the students the understanding and confidence to express that hope, equipping them to stand firm in a culture that can be combative to GOD’s order of Creation. Topics discussed will be evidence for the existence of GOD, other world religions in comparison to Christianity, the reality of the resurrection of Christ, the historicity of the Bible, archaeological evidence of the Bible. Other topics of discussion will include gender, same sex marriage, climate change, etc. During each lesson we will look at tactics on how we could respond to an opposing view so as to bring understanding. If time permits, we will even take a look at the 2nd Amendment and the Separation of Church and State to test their validity in scripture. Homework will be to “Ponder and Respond,” where the students will be asked to ponder a specific topic and respond with their thoughts/reasons and a scripture to back it up. American Literature Students will read and discuss classic works of American literature. Description The student will read classic works of American literature. The literature will include novels, short stories, poems, and biographies. Emphasis is placed on how the literature reflects the cultural setting in which the work is set, with special consideration for biblical truth. This course is taught chronologically and pairs well with a study of American History. Class time includes book discussion, review of literary terms, and small group activities. The student will complete quarterly essays and tests. Each student will give a presentation on an author they choose at the beginning of the year. Renaissance History A study of artists, scientists, religious leaders and political movements around the world. Description This class is geared to the advanced 7th grader through 10th grader. Covering 1455 to 1707, our study begins with the Renaissance and Reformation, looking at artists, scientists, religious leaders and political movements around the world. We move into a study of the growth of nations in the second half of the class as we look at the rise of exploration and colonization from the Old World to the New World. We will explore peoples and places all across the globe as we look at topics such as the wonder of a continent impacted by bold new ideas, the curiosity and courage of the first explorers and immigrants to the New World, the rise of wealthy empires in West Africa, the lives of Aboriginal Australians, and the riches and mystery of Far East Asia. Weekly, the students will have readings from the text; 3-4 paragraph responses to topics from the readings the student chooses to explore; mapwork; and quizzes. A 3-5 minute speech will be assigned in the first semester and a 3-6 page research paper will be assigned in the second semester. An additional literature component will round out our curriculum: the student will read and respond to one fiction or non-fiction (relevant to the time period) per marking period, totaling 4 for the entire year. This course taps into the student’s curiosity and engages their interests as they are asked to investigate the topics that most interest them each week. Business 101 Formerly called "Entrepreneurship," learn to take ideas and turn them into a profitable business. Description Learn how to take your ideas and turn them into a profitable business. Starting with idea generation and culminating in a business fair at the end of the KDO school year, this class will lead you through the process of starting and running a business. This class offers information, advice, guidance, and activities to learn how to start a business, looks at how businesses operate, and helps you to be a well-informed consumer. We will touch on business strategy, business planning, marketing, financing, accounting, the production process, branding, and how to make a pitch. Guest speakers from different industries will lend their expertise as well. This will be a hands-on class with lots of interaction, team building, and effective communication while encouraging you to think creatively. Introduction to Cooking Learn skills to cook basic meals at home as well as some baking. Description In this introduction to cooking your student will learn how to use proper knife skills, sautéing, roasting, blanching, baking, measuring, and much more. They will learn how to read and follow a recipe and what all those abbreviations really mean. Students must be willing to work in groups and actively participate in class. Set Up Staff Supervisor Schedule / Shift (If Applicable) Key Responsibilities Arrival Time: Arrive at 7:15 AM during the first few weeks of KDO to train staff. Regular arrival time will be 7:30 AM once staff are trained and routines are established. Room Layout Diagrams: Ensure room layout diagrams are ready for staff to reference. (Admin creates the diagrams; the Crew Leader ensures they are used and followed.) Assigning Duties: Assign set-up duties to crew members—generally two rooms per person. Point of Contact for Absences: If a staff member is unable to fulfill their duty, they should first contact another team member to arrange a swap. If no replacement is found, they must contact you. You may either assign a replacement or complete the task yourself and receive the discount credit. Staff Training: Train set-up staff at the beginning of the year using the room layout diagrams to guide proper setup. Ensure staff know where to locate extra items such as tables, chairs, monitors, etc. Pre-Session Walkthrough: Conduct a walkthrough before each session to confirm all rooms are properly set up. A master specification sheet will be provided to guide this process. Communicating Changes: Clearly communicate and assign any changes in set-up as they arise. Quality Control: If any set-up is incomplete or incorrect, notify the room attendant to ensure the issue is resolved. Assigning Discounts: Assign discounts based on the satisfactory completion of duties. If a room is consistently not set up correctly, reduce or withhold the discount .
