Kindergarten Expanding Our Horizons Together we'll explore God's world and our role in it through fun and exciting hands-on activities that promote communication, cooperation, mutual respect, empathy Requirements Along with turning 5 years old before the end of September, children entering the Kindergarten class should be able to: Follow rules and routines at home. Sustain attention to a single task over a period of time (including listening to a story and completing a craft or other activity for 15 minutes). Understand and follow simple directions (complete 3 step directions with little to no reminders). There will be a 4-week trial period when your child starts Kindergarten for the teacher to assess and determine if your child demonstrates the ability to handle the class routines and activities as well as to evaluate his/her ability to interact appropriately with his/her peers. Theology Learn Biblical Truth in a clear and systematic way. Description This class will focus on learning Biblical Truth in a clear and systematic way. Using Charles C. Ryrie’s Basic Theology as a guide, the goal of this class is to increase your student's understanding of GOD, how He has set things in order and how that order touches every area of our lives. We will focus on Who God Is, How He reveals Himself, The Trinity, The Holy Spirit, Angels, Our Adversary, The Gospel, The Armor of GOD and much more. Class time will consist of Bible reading, teaching and class discussion. Homework will be to “Ponder and Respond,” where the students will be asked to ponder a topic and respond with their thoughts and a scripture to back it up. A Bible is required for class. This class is geared for High School but a mature bridge student may be considered. Cookie Decorating Beginner friendly course leads students through the process of both baking and decorating cookies. Description Making picture worthy cookies doesn't have to be complicated and frustrating. Over the course of the semester this beginner friendly course will lead students through the process of both baking and decorating delicious sugar cookies. Through hands on experience students will be exposed to multiple decorating techniques as well as learning the dynamics of icing texture and consistency. There will be minimal homework and plenty of pretty treats to take home to share, including holiday and seasonal themes. Artists This art class is for the student who enjoys art and wants to limit work to the classroom. Description This is a class geared for the student who enjoys art but does not have a lot of time outside of class for homework. The semester will be divided up into 4 different units. Each unit will be focused on one of 4 different mediums and one or more artists. Students will be given several projects ideas based on the medium and artist. Students will choose a project and work on it in class for the next 3 weeks. Homework will not be assigned, however; the student is welcome to work on their project at home as time allows, and will be expected to finish the project started in class. Students will bring supplies from a master supply list. A log will be provided for the student and parent to record logged art hours. Students will be graded on being prepared with supplies, project, completed log, and readiness to work with a good attitude. Accounting: Business Operations Learn the basics, skills and concepts of accounting. Description Learn the basics, skills and concepts of accounting. We will be using QuickBooks Online to set up a service business that any teen can run with lessons that are real to life, not theory. Using real business accounting we will be opening a new company, connecting to Paypal and other banks, categorizing transactions and setting rules, chart of accounts and petty cash, service items, sales tax and service invoices, inventory product items, customizing logo and forms, setting up tags, importing lists, reconciling bank accounts, billing customers, purchases and paying vendors, inventory functions and journal entries. Lastly, students will lean how to run and read business financial reports. KDO has secured access to the Intuit Education Program, which offers complimentary access to QuickBooks Online. This class is an opportunity to advance skills in accounting with an option of a QuickBooks certification by completing an additional course and passing an exam through a third party partner, at an additional cost. Physical Science Introduces basic concepts from chemistry and physics and preparation for upper-level sciences. Description Physical Science introduces basic concepts from chemistry and physics, providing excellent preparation for upper-level biology, chemistry and physics classes. Class time is divided into one hour of interactive lecture and one hour of interactive lab time with hands-on experimentation. Students will grow as they develop critical thinking, science vocabulary and formal writing skills working on lab reports. This course has two major projects: a science fair first semester and a debate second semester. Because of the calculations and formulas used in this course, it is recommended that students who take this course be at an algebra level in math. Spanish I Introduction to Spanish through reading, listening to, creating and dramatizing simple stories. Description Students will be introduced to Spanish through reading simple stories and listening to, creating, dramatizing, and retelling stories as a class. The phrases and verbs taught in this class are based on the 300 most frequent words in the language. Students will also learn a variety of grammatical concepts including present tense, past tenses, articles, infinitives, conditional tense, gerund, reflexive verbs, indirect object pronouns, and verb conjugations within the context of stories. Focus will be on mastery and proficiency through repetition and stories. Homework will include reading and review exercises based on mini-stories to reinforce the vocabulary and structures of the language. We will read and discuss (in Spanish!) 4 mini-novels which include cultural information about native speaking countries. This class counts as a full credit in humanities/foreign language. STEM I For students who like to know the why and how of engineering and design. Description Science Technology Engineering Mathematics This class with a new teacher is for students who like to know the why and how of engineering and design! In this class, students will work both individually and collaboratively to design and construct working models, such as a hydraulic maze, a magnetic train, a judo bot, a circuit challenge, and more. For most of the projects, students or teams will compete in class to determine which model was the most successful. This class gives students the opportunity to work collaboratively and to build problem-solving skills. Minimal homework will be assigned, but occasionally students may need to finish projects at home. STEM 1 and STEM 2 projects will be different from each other, so students may take one or both semesters.
