Introduction to Cooking II Learn skills to cook basic meals at home as well as some baking. Description n this introduction to cooking your student will learn how to use proper knife skills, sautéing, roasting, blanching, baking, measuring, and much more. They will learn how to read and follow a recipe and what all those abbreviations really mean. Students must be willing to work in groups and actively participate in class. Creative Cooking II This class will allow the more experienced cook to take their skills to the next level. Description Do you love to cook? Want to learn how to make inventive dishes? Creative cooking may be for you! This class will allow the more experienced cook to take their skills to the next level. Students will be taught challenging cooking techniques, how to combine flavors, and will be encouraged to use their abilities to create culinary adventures. Lesson plans will be geared toward the interests and skills of each class and will include the occasional basket challenge (building a dish based on "mystery" ingredients provided). Cake Art II Gum Paste Flowers Description Learn the art of gum paste flowers. Use cutters and tools to shape individual petals and assemble them on wire to create a realistic-looking bouquet that will embellish any cake. Projects include daisy, carnation, peony, briar rose, calla lily, ivy, filler flowers and two different ways of making a rose. The final project will be a complete cake or display that the student will design, assemble, and bring on the last day for KDO students and staff to admire and vote for their favorite. Cookie Decorating Beginner friendly course leads students through the process of both baking and decorating cookies. Description Making picture worthy cookies doesn't have to be complicated and frustrating. Graphic Design Learn about and create graphic design projects. Description This semester-long course gets students started in the field of graphic design. With engaging multimedia projects and instructor-led activities, this class is designed to challenge and engage creativity. From designing a book cover to creating marketing materials, this course will give students a strong foundation for success in the graphic design field. Students will explore the following: design aesthetic; industrial design; fashion design; company rebranding; font, web and logo design; character design and animation. Artists This art class is for the student who enjoys art and wants to limit work to the classroom. Description This is a class geared for the student who enjoys art but does not have a lot of time outside of class for homework. The semester will be divided up into 4 different units. Each unit will be focused on one of 4 different mediums and one or more artists. Students will be given several projects ideas based on the medium and artist. Students will choose a project and work on it in class for the next 3 weeks. Homework will not be assigned, however; the student is welcome to work on their project at home as time allows, and will be expected to finish the project started in class. Students will bring supplies from a master supply list. A log will be provided for the student and parent to record logged art hours. Students will be graded on being prepared with supplies, project, completed log, and readiness to work with a good attitude. Kindergarten Expanding Our Horizons Together we'll explore God's world and our role in it through fun and exciting hands-on activities that promote communication, cooperation, mutual respect, empathy Requirements Along with turning 5 years old before the end of September, children entering the Kindergarten class should be able to: Follow rules and routines at home. Sustain attention to a single task over a period of time (including listening to a story and completing a craft or other activity for 15 minutes). Understand and follow simple directions (complete 3 step directions with little to no reminders). There will be a 4-week trial period when your child starts Kindergarten for the teacher to assess and determine if your child demonstrates the ability to handle the class routines and activities as well as to evaluate his/her ability to interact appropriately with his/her peers. 5th/6th Grade Ancient Civilizations and the Bible Requirements Required Text/Materials: Mystery of History, Volume 1 Audio CD's (Great for the auditory learner). Teacher Erin Pearce, Jamie Menges Description History and the Bible come alive in our 5th and 6th grade class as we study through Mystery of History, Volume 1. Our study of history will start at the dawn of Creation and conclude at the life of Jesus Christ. We will wonder at God’s design in Creation and the Fall, study the catastrophe of the Flood, discover the variety of people groups, and observe the unfolding of God’s plan for His chosen people. We will explore the interconnected story of the Bible and history as we look at kingdoms of the ancient Egyptians, Assyrians and Babylonians, Israelites, Medes and Persians, Greeks and Romans. The Egyptian Festival, Greek Festival, and Roman Market Day are highlights in our year of learning. Our class enjoys learning through creating, designing, discussing, debating, role-playing, reenacting, illustrating, researching, reporting, and much more. Our days center on history and branch out to include art, science, Bible, literature, geography, drama, music, architecture, and creative writing designed to engage students of all learning styles. At-home work is provided in the 5th/6th class. The assignments are leveled and scalable, with the intention of providing you the ideal amount of support you desire for your educational objectives. Some at-home reading (or listening to the audio version) from our class text is built into the expectations for the class. The elementary KDO teachers do not assign grades for the work completed and the parent maintains the level of involvement in the learning process they see fit. KDO is designed to be a service to your homeschooling journey. Parents may choose one of two “levels” that best suit their student and is scaleable at the parent’s discretion. The Foundation option for your student accomplishing 30 min. /wk of preparation for class to provide a basis for steady in-class dialog and momentum.
