Civics Provides students with knowledge to intelligently exercise their citizenship responsibilities. Description This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how our local, state, and federal governments operate. The primary purpose of this course is to give the student knowledge they need to know to be able to intelligently exercise their citizenship responsibilities. In addition to the textbook, The Land of Fair Play, students will be working on notebook studies on the Election Process, American Government and the US Constitution. Class time emphasizes interactive learning through engaging activities such as passing a mock bill, presenting persuasive arguments, participating in a scripted mock trial, experiencing the voting process, and electing a President. Through these experiences, students will gain a deeper understanding of government processes while strengthening their critical thinking, communication, and civic engagement skills. Introduction to Psychology Explore psychological theories and practice through the lens of Scripture (CLEP aligned). Description The social science of psychology lays the foundation in career fields such as education, business and marketing, health care, sports, counseling, politics, pastoral careers, along with the avocations of family, home education, and friendship. Although Psychology is usually taught from an humanistic and evolutionary perspective, we will explore historical and current psychological theories and practice through the lens of the special revelation of Scripture. Along with Psychology, a dose of philosophy and theology will be thrown in for good discussion. Students should come prepared to discuss these topics and learn to discern the fact from the fiction in this broad discipline of social science. Survival Learn or practice survival skills like shelter building, foraging, and fire building. Description It seems basic, but are you prepared to survive an emergency? This is a 1 semester presentation and hands-on style class. In addition to reading the given text assignments, each week students will learn or practice survival skills like shelter building, water purification, fire building, orienteering and foraging. For their capstone project, students will create a diorama or poster depicting skills or topics learned in the course or demonstrate a survival skill for the class. Cleaning Crew Supervisor Schedule / Shift (If Applicable) Key Responsibilities Assign Cleaning Duties: Assign staff to rooms—generally two rooms per person. (21 spaces to clean + bathrooms) Point of Contact for Absences: If a staff member is unable to fulfill their assigned duty, they should first attempt to swap with another staff member. If they are unable to find a replacement, they must contact you. At that point, you may either assign a replacement or complete the duty yourself and take the credit. Staff Training: Train staff at the beginning of the year. Use the room layout diagrams to demonstrate how each room should be reset. End-of-Day Walkthrough: Perform a full walkthrough at the end of each session to ensure all duties have been properly completed. Follow-Up on Incomplete Tasks: If any jobs are not completed to expectations, notify the room attendant and ensure the issue is resolved before leaving. Assigning Credits: Assign credits for duties completed satisfactorily. If a room is consistently not done correctly, reduce or withhold credit. If you (the supervisor) must complete the job, you receive the credit. Organization & Clean-Up: Ensure all KDO items are returned neatly and orderly to their designated locations. Ensure all church items are returned neatly and properly as found. Closing Responsibilities: Supervisors are expected to be among the last to leave the building, confirming everything is in order. Front Door Security Schedule / Shift (If Applicable) Key Responsibilities Shifts: 8:00 - 11:30 AM and 11:30 AM - 2:40 PM Have a smile and a warm welcome! (But also, a sharp eye!) Make sure students/parents show the proper pass for entrance. Stop those who do not have a pass. (An approved directory is provided with names of those who may enter. ID must match directory.) No pass? No name in directory? No entrance! Those on church business MUST go to the church office doors. Door must stay locked and secure during KDO. Watch the rest rooms. Exploring Stories II This class is designed for the bridge student who is looking for a language arts class. Class I and II may be taken in any order. Description This class is designed for the bridge student who is looking for a language arts class. Each week our class will explore a different short story (32+ total). Using these short stories we will cover literary elements (setting, character traits, theme, symbolism, conflict, figurative language, point of view, tone, and some non-fiction elements also). This class will also introduce vocabulary, develop grammar skills, and provide opportunities for increasing effective writing skills. Please note : This class alternates stories each year. Therefore, it is possible for students to take the class for 2 years without repeating stories. Students may take Exploring Stories II without having been enrolled in Exploring Stories I. Fiber Arts 11 This class is an all-level knit, crochet, and embroidery BYO project workshop. Description This class is an all-level knit, crochet, and embroidery BYO project workshop. Students bring their current projects to class for guidance, instruction, demonstration, explanation, mistake correction, pattern reading, and general help of any kind. This is a group class where students can encourage one another, work at their own pace with help at hand, and be inspired to try new techniques. Mrs. Kollmar will circulate around the room helping each student in turn throughout the class. Students will learn techniques, gain confidence, finish projects and have a great time. Mrs. Kollmar will inspire students and help students through all phases of a project, but will not require or assign any specific projects. This class is for self-motivated students who enjoy working with their hands and desire to learn new techniques. Self motivated students could work on an Independent Study Fiber Arts credit with instructor support of new skills development. TIP: to best utilize class time and get the most new skill-based instruction, I recommend bringing a list of techniques you would like to master over the course of the semester. For those students who are fast learners, plan to work on many small projects so that you can learn new techniques each week. Health II Students will learn how to live a balanced life physically, spiritually, and mentally. Description In Health semester two, we will explore topics such as memory, sleep, social health/communication, mental health, and the effects they have on the brain and body. Substances such as alcohol, drugs, and tobacco use, and the damaging effects on the developing brain and body will be addressed. Resources will be provided to help encourage communication at home while these topics are being addressed. Students will also learn practical ways to apply what we learn in class to everyday life.
