STEM II For students who like to know the why and how of engineering and design. Description Science Technology Engineering Mathematics This class with a new teacher is for students who like to know the why and how of engineering and design! In this class, students will work both individually and collaboratively to design and construct working models, such as a hydraulic maze, a magnetic train, a judo bot, a circuit challenge, and more. For most of the projects, students or teams will compete in class to determine which model was the most successful. This class gives students the opportunity to work collaboratively and to build problem-solving skills. Minimal homework will be assigned, but occasionally students may need to finish projects at home. Cake Decorating II Advanced Icing Flowers & Techniques Description This class begins with the classic Wilton Rose and includes other flowers such as a carnation, pansy, daffodil, and primrose. We will use royal icing to make ahead and dry flowers to arrange on a cake. We will also explore techniques such as figure piping, lattice and lace, cornelli, and brush embroidery. Students will also learn how to stack tiers of cake. On the last day of class each student will bring a final cake of their own design to demonstrate their new skills; these will be voted on by peers and adults at KDO. Auto Repair This course offers hands-on experience in basic automobile maintenance. Description My car has needs: Maintaining a functional relationship with your vehicle. Designed for new or so-to-be drivers, this elective course offers hands-on experience in basic automobile maintenance. Within the realm of stewardship, and with a focus on safety, the students will become proficient at first-line car inspection and the performance of recommended preventative maintenance. Topics will include... "There's an owners manual? Why won't it start? What's that strange noise? Check WHAT fluids? Can I fix that? What is in my emergency kit?" Emphasis will be placed on accessing repair and assistance resources when needed. Weather permitting, the classroom will be the parking area with attention applied to the individual students cars. No additional course costs are anticipated. The semester-end goal is for each student to embrace the personal responsibility of car ownership and demonstrate common car maintenance skills such as changing a tire, replacing bulbs and checking fluid levels. US History Explores the history of the US from the colonial period to the present through a Biblical worldview. Description This year-long course explores the history of the United States from the colonial period to the Biden Administration through the lens of a Biblical worldview. Using the Bob Jones U.S. History textbook (6th edition) as the primary resource, students will engage with historical content, primary source documents, and thought-provoking activities designed to strengthen their understanding of the nation’s past and its relevance today. Class sessions will include chapter reviews, collaborative timelines, and group activities to reinforce learning. Weekly reading assignments and chapter questions will help students sharpen their analytical and evaluative skills as they learn to distinguish fact from opinion, assess bias, and appreciate multiple perspectives in historical interpretation. Students will complete two major projects: Semester I: A research report and speech on a U.S. historical person, place, or event of their choice. Semester II: A media presentation on a current U.S. event (history in the making), using tools such as Canva, YouTube, PowerPoint, or Keynote to create a short video. KDO has been equipping homeschool families since 1992. Where is KDO Academy located? KDO Academy meets in southeast, York County. What days does KDO meet? KDO meets every Thursday during the academic year. Elementary classes run from 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM. Bridge and High School classes run from 8:15 AM – 2:30 PM. Is KDO Academy a private school? No. KDO Academy is not a private school. KDO is a homeschool resource and enrichment program. Parents remain the primary educators. KDO supplements and supports the homeschool journey — it does not replace it. Is KDO Academy accredited? KDO Academy is a homeschool resource program, not an accredited school. High School courses are transcript-ready, meaning parents can confidently document coursework with KDO's structured grading and academic support to provide to your approved evaluator. Personal Finance Provides students with knowledge and application of basic financial principles. Description This course will cover the Foundations in Personal Finance series by Dave Ramsey. The goal of this curriculum is to empower students with knowledge and application of basic financial principles so they can make sound financial decisions for life. Each week students will learn important financial concepts, taught by Dave Ramsey and his team of experts, as they work through their student text workbook. Class activities include reviewing key principles, creating a budget, participating in a stock market simulation game, check writing, bank reconciliation, roommate agreements, college options and loans, understanding your paycheck and taxes, etc. To apply what they are learning, students will have additional homework each week which will include video segments and student workbook pages and supplemental exercises, such as: maintaining a working budget, establishing an emergency savings amount, researching a car to buy, writing a resume, learning interviewing practices, etc. Students will complete a cost-of-living assignment and present to the class a working budget for a projected job with actual living expenses. The Instructor has completed the Dave Ramsey training sessions required to teach this course. This class is geared for 11th and 12th grade but is open to any High School student.
